The bar at The Lex is always full of neighborhood regulars, a real Saint Paul institution. The lobster mac and cheese was great. I assume the chicken coq au vin was good since my husband cleaned his plate. Thankful the creme brûlée hasn't changed. Yum!

The Lexington, a veritable icon in St. Paul, is in a beautiful building. As a kid, I would see it as my parents drove by, and wonder what it was like inside. But, all these years, I had not eaten there, and had heard that the food was mediocre at best, and sort of a place for (to be politically incorrect) "blue-hairs" to dine. Add to that fact that I am Italian and a foodie, it seemed unlikely I'd ever eat there. Then finally, The Lex announced it was going to close its doors.

Some young and enterprising couples bought the restaurant. They are not chefs. They may not even be foodies. But they know business, and so went into this venture to save The Lex. I still was not interested in dining there, but the Italian group (of which I'm a member) held an event there, so I decided to go.

What a delightful surprise. The new chef created a menu exclusively for this event; the dishes were traditional Italian dishes (as in boneless braised shortribs, etc., not traditional Italian restaurant in America where the pasta is overcooked and the sauce a spicy Prego rewarmed and shingled with gloppy parmesan).

We had salads, first/entree courses, and dessert. All were executed beautifully. The chefs came to the table to see how we liked it, and we all suggested they add THIS stuff to the menu.

So, I ate at The Lex, but didn't eat off the menu. But, I know their chefs know what they are doing. I would like to see these new owners make a go of it. I recommend going there, giving honest feedback, and trying it on for size.

Perhaps we can get a very young crowd involved, and change the entire concept of "blue-hair" patrons to mean kool-aid blue.

The owners at The Lex changed but food food is still wonderful. I had a NY strip with au gratin potatoes. The potatoes were the best!! Steak was done perfectly!! The server was excellent, very helpful and attentive. We ate in the bar side and it was perfect atmosphere. We've been here several times and like always, it was outstanding!

We visited the Lexington despite some negative comments about the new ownership. We decided to see for ourselves. The service was very professional and our waitress was outstanding. All the food was delicious. We had Coconut Shrimp (fabulous), Sauteed Walleye (it came with a very good salad and delicious asparagus, and enough to share for two if we had known to do so), Strip Steak (delicious and perfectly cooked), great baked potatoes, humongous onion rings which looked like popovers (obviously cooked from scratch and wonderful), great Lavosh bread and rolls, fantastic Mac and Cheese, good Crab Cakes, and a very tasty Lobster pasta. All in all a wonderful exeperience. Would definitely go there again. The new owners seem to know what they are doing. Yum!!!

How has this placed escaped me after a life in the Twin Cities?  My sister swears we went here as kids, but I think she is remembering Lee's Village Inn.  I was attracted here after reading an article in The Villager about new ownership/ management and more specifically the fact that they are now serving "boutique" beef from a small producer...being a steak junkie I had to try it...there must be more to life beyond the three St. Paul Steak Places Kinkaid's, Mancinni's and the Cherokee, right?   Um, yes-definitely!  First of all the dining room falls into the "they just don't make 'em like THIS anymore"  category...it was like stepping into another era.  So we went right for some classic martinis (when in Rome...).  We split the crab cakes, which were crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside (ad thankfully more "crab" than "cake") and each had a steak-I had the Ribeye and my companion had the Filet.  Both were as they say "like buttah" and I think our more civilized side of the river finally has a steakhouse to compete with Murray's.  Absolutely fantastic cuts of beef...I wish they carried this brand at Lund's so I could try them on my home grill.  The steaks came with au gratin potatoes that were decadent, yet homey...it became a project to alternate between the buttery steak and cheesey potatoes.  Side note:  If you order their steaks at anything above Medium you should eat at Wendy's instead...they are just too good!  We were stuffed, but our charmingly matronly waitress suggested we try a dessert special that was off-menu, a "Chocolate Wellington" and how could we refuse?  It was elegant and gooey at the same time...we actually lingered with our coffee an extra ten minutes so our digestion could catch up so we could finish the thing.   Only complaint:  The men's room and ladies room are very far away from each other...weird.  But that won't keep me from coming back.

I and 2 friends had dinner there, I for the second time since the changed menu and ownership, and my friends for the first time since the changes. We have all eaten there for years, and were not disappointed by the new menu. I had a great steak, one friend had steak and scallops, and one had his favorite, chicken pot pie. We enjoyed the expanded bread basket, we were glad the Lex salad was almost unchanged, and we were glad to see the large dessert menu. Drinks were excellent, and our server was very pleasant.
